Following the release of the YouTube video “Generative AI in Premiere Pro powered by Adobe Firefly | Adobe Video” on April 15 2024, discussions on artificial intelligence (AI) in multimedia design have had mixed reviews.

Summary of Features From Adobe’s Report - Adobe Previews Breakthrough AI Innovations to Advance Professional Video Workflows Within Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Streamline workflows and making it easier for more people to create and ideate

  • Introducing third-party generative AI models from OpenAI, Pika Labs and Runway directly into Premiere Pro

  • AI-powered audio workflows in Premiere Pro now available

Blog author Sam Haysom wrote a piece titled “Adobe’s new generative AI tools for video are absolutely terrifying” following Adobe Video’s release of their Generative AI promotion video.

Haysom and other creatives believe that these features from Adobe and other generative AI from third parties coming into the multimedia design world are scary and making it “harder and harder to tell what's real on our screens.” Instead of being terrified, we should be excited and see this as an opportunity to significantly improve the potential and efficiency of future projects. In this blog post, we will discuss why exactly multimedia designers should warmly welcome the incorporation of AI in order to enhance their craft and move forward.

Increased Efficiency and Productivity

One of the strongest reasons for multimedia designers to give AI the benefit of the doubt is the significant boost it provides in terms of efficiency and productivity. Through automation of routine tasks like image editing, video processing, and layout design, designers can accomplish more in less time.

Design is a series of rules that can be learned and improved upon over time. Teach a system to do this, and complete sites will be generated in minutes versus weeks or months.

This allows designers to meet tight deadlines, iterate on designs more rapidly, and allocate resources towards more strategic and high-impact projects. By streamlining workflows and reducing manual labor, AI allows designers to focus their efforts on creative exploration and brainstorming, ultimately increasing productivity.

Easier Access To Data And Resources

AI integration offers multimedia designers easier access to a wealth of advanced tools and resources that were once only for industry elites or came with a cost.  This lets designers push the boundaries of their creativity and experiment with even better products for their clients. Styve Marketing’s “Why designers should embrace AI (and not fear it)” uses Google Analytics as an example of this. Designers could use Google Analytics to gather detailed data such as their clients’ demographics, and viewing history in order to create more catered solutions.

AI Cannot Replace The Human Touch

Multimedia designers, or any working adult for that matter, should not be afraid of AI because it is simply not at the level to replace the human touch. While AI is exceptionally good at automation, assisting with generating ideas and providing in-depth data with just a simple prompt, it lacks the nuanced understanding, creativity, and emotional intelligence that humans bring to the design process. However, this makes it all the more of a reason to embrace AI and not run away from it, as it brings qualities to the table that either people do not want to deal with on their own, or do not excel in.

This model presented by Altitude Design created by Bill Wallsgrove breaks down the qualities humans have as opposed to AI.

AI Is Our Friend, Not Our Foe

To sum it all up, AI technology and human creativity can be a mutually beneficial relationship. Far from being a source of ended careers, AI is able to elevate human design capabilities. If designers want to remain relevant in this fast-changing industry, it is extremely important to see AI as an ally instead of an adversary. Once that can be accomplished, people can truly see what great gifts generative AI can give us, like the features that are coming to Adobe Premiere Pro.
